West Yorkshire Police launch investigation into MP's racist abuse
Tory donor apologizes for reported racist comments
Police launch probe after Diane Abbott files complaint
West Yorkshire Police has launched an investigation into alleged racist abuse directed at MP Diane Abbott. The move comes after Abbott reported Tory donor Frank Hester to the police over comments he reportedly made about her.
Hester has since apologized for the comments, which were reported in the Guardian newspaper. In a statement released on Saturday evening, Hester said he was "deeply ashamed" of the language he had used. He said he had "no excuse" for his actions and that he was "committed to making amends."
The comments attributed to Hester have been widely condemned, including by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. On Sunday, Sunak said the comments were "completely unacceptable" and that Hester's apology was "not enough."
The investigation by West Yorkshire Police is ongoing. It is not yet clear whether Hester will be charged with any offense.
